What are these exams and what are they for?
Infertility: a medical check-up for each partner:
When there is a suspicion of infertility, each of the couple’s two partners must undergo medical examinations.
The medical assessment on the female side:
Your doctor will ask you about your medical history and lifestyle. He will also perform a full gynecological examination.
Other exams are also necessary:
- A blood test, intended to detect a possible hormonal problem, to assess ovulation, to determine the ovarian reserve , or to identify a genetic or infectious disease.
- An ultrasound to determine the proper functioning of the uterus and the two ovaries.
- A hysterosalpingography, that is, an x – ray of the internal cavity of the uterus and fallopian tubes, which can detect a possible abnormality.
- Possibly, in certain cases:
- A hysteroscopy, which consists of introducing, under general or local anesthesia, a thin optical tube inside the uterus, connected to a camera.
- A laparoscopy, which consists of introducing an optical tube inside the belly, under general anesthesia, to specify the internal relationships between the organs. The examination detects the sequelae of infections, uterine malformations, adhesions, or endometriosis , which may be responsible for fertilization problems.
The medical assessment on the male side:
The doctor will also ask your partner about their medical history and lifestyle.
Other exams are also necessary:
- The collection of a sperm sample by masturbation in a sterile bottle, which will be brought to the laboratory within an hour. The laboratory then performs a spermogram, that is to say, it determines the number, shape and mobility of the sperm , to assess their ability to fertilize an oocyte .
- A blood test , which detects any hormonal, infectious or genetic problem
- A clinical examination of the genitals. Sometimes an ultrasound of the testicles in case of disturbed spermogram is recommended. It is a gynecologist, or an urologist having been trained in andrology, who carries out this kind of examinations.
